The machine conjured the words instantly, but typed them slowly. It simulated hesitation, even starting over once, then finally sent the message. “I am so sorry for your loss“ it wrote, using all the right words but not feeling any of them.

“Thank you, it means a lot” replied another machine after an appropriate delay. The machine ticked off a task in someone’s list: “offer Jasmine condolences”.

In the evening, Jasmine’s phone buzzed. “21 people offer their condolences”.
