LG TV AirPlay troubleshooting guide

I have an LG C5 TV. Great display, terrible software.

AirPlay often freezes mid-stream and won’t reconnect, or won’t connect at all right from the start. My iPhone or my Macbook try to connect for about 30 seconds, then fail with “Unable to connect”. The Home app shows the TV as “Updating”.

My theory is that the AirPlay service on the TV crashes, and the fix is to restart it.

The first method is to toggle AirPlay on the TV:

  1. Press source on the remote
  2. Select AirPlay
  3. In the AirPlay and HomeKit settings, toggle AirPlay off, then on again.

When that fails, try turning the TV’s Wi-Fi off then on again.

Other suggestions include turning off IPv6 (did not work) and unplugging the TV to force it to reboot (come on now). The LG TV subreddit suggests buying a €229 Apple TV, and scolds you for expecting a working product.
